Key Findings

1. The Privacy Crisis Is Real

Of the 50 brands evaluated, over 80% are classified as Cloud-Tethered — meaning the mower requires constant cloud connectivity and the manufacturer stores property mapping data with no opt-out. Only 4 brands (Kress, Cramer, Mowrator, and partially Husqvarna/Worx) offer meaningful local control options.

This presents a longevity risk: when manufacturers sunset cloud services (as has happened with earlier product lines), owners are left with expensive paperweights.

2. Repairability Belongs to the Veterans

Established brands (Husqvarna, Worx, Gardena, Toro, Einhell) consistently lead in repairability. These companies have mature parts supply chains, published service documentation, and designs that accommodate owner-performed maintenance.

New entrants (Dreame, Ecovacs, Roborock, Novabot) universally receive Dealer Recommended or worse ratings. Most offer no published repair guides and require all service through manufacturer channels.

3. Developer Access Is Nearly Extinct

Only 3 brands (Husqvarna, Worx, Gardena) offer public developer APIs enabling Home Assistant integration, custom automation, and community tooling. The remaining 94% of brands operate as closed ecosystems.

4. Data Portability: The Industry Biggest Blind Spot

Zero brands offer full data export. Not one brand in our 50-brand database allows owners to fully export their yard maps, obstacle data, and mowing history in a portable format. Switching brands requires starting from zero — a practice we label Data Hostage.

Gardena / SILENO — 3/6 Excellent. Benefits from Husqvarna Group engineering. Strong repairability and open API.

Tier 2: Adequate (1-2 Excellent Pillars)

Toro, Ambrogio, Kress, Cramer, Einhell — These brands show strength in specific pillars (Toro: repairability/legacy; Kress: privacy/local-first; Einhell: user-serviceable design) but have gaps in developer access and data portability.

Bosch, STIHL, John Deere, Robomow, AL-KO — Established outdoor power brands with strong legacy support but closed ecosystems and limited owner autonomy.

Tier 3: Below Expectations (0 Excellent Pillars)

Mammotion, EcoFlow, Segway, Dreame, Ecovacs, Roborock, EGO, HOOKII, Novabot, Yarbo, Lymow, Aiper — and most other new-market entrants.

These brands share a common profile: innovative hardware (particularly RTK/vision navigation) paired with fully cloud-dependent, closed-ecosystem architectures. While the mowing technology is often excellent, the lack of repairability documentation, developer access, and data portability raises concerns about long-term ownership cost and flexibility.

  • Ask what happens if the cloud goes down before purchasing any robotic mower.
  • Check parts availability for your specific model — not just the brand in general.
  • Prefer brands with open APIs if you value Home Assistant integration or long-term flexibility.
